Dr. Jack Cáraves (he/they/el/elle) is an assistant professor of gender & sexuality studies at UC Riverside. Cáraves has a Ph.D. in Chicana/o and Central American Studies from UCLA and a B.A. in Latin American & Latino Studies and Politics from UC Santa Cruz.

Cáraves is a queer/trans, Latina/x, interdisciplinary feminist scholar that specializes in Latinx gender & sexuality studies and trans studies. His research examines the role of gender variance, trans embodiment, and sexuality in shaping migration, access to healthcare, employment, social/familial support systems, and world-making for trans Latinxs in Los Angeles. His work in the trans Latinx community began through a community-based participatory research project with the TransLatin@ Coalition that focused on capturing the holistic health needs of trans Latinxs in southern California. Cáraves is currently working on his first book, Trans Power, which is under contract with Duke University Press.

Cáraves has published in Latino Studies, The Journal of LGBT Youth, the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, the Association for Mexican American Educators Journal, Transgender Studies Quarterly and in the anthology: Queer and Trans Migrations: Dynamics of Illegalization, Detention and Deportation. His research has been funded by the Latina Futures 2050 Lab, University of Illinois, the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the Latino Center for Leadership Development-Southern Methodist University, the Institute of American Cultures, and The Center for the Study of Women.

Cáraves is also co-creator and co-host of, Anzaldúing It, a queer Latinx podcast dedicated to navigating the borderlands of queer Latinidad, academia, and mental health. With over half a million listens, the podcast has been used as a teaching tool for underrepresented students and has been featured on Hiplatina, Autostraddle, PRIDE.com, GOMAG, and was featured in the 2019 Google Youth Tech Summit.
